This is truly an attempt to bring a project together for sisters who just need a space to gather and gain a sense of sisterhood. Honestly, this project is something I should have sought to create years ago when I realized there was a vacuum in the Muslim community. Too many sisters feel isolated and alone. They often look to the masjid to aleviate this feeling. However, at this time the masjid is not prepared to meet these needs fully. In fact I question wether this is the purpose of the masjid at all. I see the true purpose of the masjid, worship, as being compromised by the behavior of many sisters who see the prayer hall as a community center. Many masjids have begun to address this by creating spaces for community centers, multi-purpose halls, and classrooms so that sisters can meet. However, in all too many cases the prayer hall has become the hub of social interaction that is often times exclusive rather than inclusive. Therefore, I think it is imparative that we create spaces for sisters to just meet and fellowship. I will be opening my own home each week on Sunday mornings to provide such a space. I also hope it will help us heal the divisions that we have in our communities. I pray this will be an organic attempt to bring healing to many. I pray that this idea spreads in the Muslim community and we see circles of thought, sisterhood, and mentorship develop and pop up.
